When it debuted in 1983, NBC News at Sunrise was the early morning counterpart to Nightly News. At the time it was an important program on NBC’s schedule. Many local stations did not air morning newscasts, so News at Sunrise was broadcast at 6:30 a.m., just before Today. Connie Chung was hired away from CBS to anchor. There was also a dedicated sports anchor and someone for the weather. As the show moved to earlier time slots, viewership would decrease drastically. These days, its replacement show is seen at 4:00 a.m. in many markets.
Sunrise and Overnight shared similar backdrops. After Sunrise was over they switch back to the Nightly News set. Then after the last NBC News Digest they would switch to Overnight. This according to Gwenda Blair’s book on Jessica Savitch. Blair writes that the Overnight staff would have to be quiet during the Digest(s). Then as soon as the last one was finished they’d make the switch. Blair also says Savitch was offered Sunrise but turned it down because she thought NBC was trying to bury her in the mornings. If she had accepted the job she’d prob still be alive as she may have skipped that fateful dinner to get home and go to bed.
