Themes from ‘Others’

“Seven News” (Australia) 2004 – 2014 Theme

The Mission continues to be a popular theme is Australia. In 2004, after the Athens Olympics, Seven News was revamped. Part of that revamp was a new remix of John Williams classic theme that Seven News has used for years. It’s recorded off the air and sounds kind of rough, the heavy sound effects contributing to that. But it still gives you a good impression of what the theme sounds like. In 2014 this theme was dropped in favor of a completely different theme that was not based on The Mission. However, John Williams’ composition returned in restyled fashion in 2016.

“Countdown with Keith Olbermann” (MSNBC) 2003 – 2011 Theme

Countdown started as more or less a regular newscast in the early days of the Iraq War. But it would grow into MSNBC’s signature show. It’s fast pace, irreverent segments and liberal commentary made it a ratings hit. MSNBC used the show as a template to rebuild its entire primetime lineup. Two of its guest hosts, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, would get their own shows on MSNBC. Ultimately it wasn’t bad ratings that brought the show down, but Keith Olbermann’s fights with management. The show – and its host – left MSNBC in 2011 but turned up a few months later on Current TV. This theme was used during the years that the program was on MSNBC. It samples the second movement of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and thereby makes an allusion to NBC News’ long history. That six-note introduction had been prominently used on the Huntley-Brinkley Report since the 1950’s.

“The News with Brian Williams” (MSNBC) Theme

Brian Williams joined NBC News in 1993 and was quickly groomed to be the next anchor of NBC Nightly News. At first he was named White House correspondent followed in 1996 (with the launch of MSNBC) by his own hour-long news program called “The News”. He anchored the program, which later moved to CNBC, until 2004 when John Siegenthaler temporarily took over before the program was cancelled. This theme is what I believe to be the second theme to the program (the first being composed by Shelly Palmer). It is composed by Peter Fish.

“Seven News” (Australia) 1999 – 2004 Theme

Seven News in Australia uses this club remix of John Williams’ The Mission. In terms of branding, Seven News has always been closely aligned with NBC News. Before they started to use this theme, their newscast was called Nightly News and it used the same cut of The Mission that NBC Nightly News used to open its broadcast. But this is far from the only similarity between Australian TV news and American TV news. The National Nine News uses a theme from the famous movie Cool Hand Luke, the same theme used most notably by owned and operated ABC stations for their Eyewitness News. And the Ten Evening News for a while used opening graphics that were more than just inspired by the late 80s open for the CBS Evening News. Finally, over at Channel 9 they have had their own version of 60 Minutes since 1978 and their own version of Nightline since 1992.
